WHY IS INFANT SAFETY SO IMPORTANT

How do you keep your baby safe?

Newborn and pets

Depending on your own circumstances, babies and pets can be a wonderful combination. Despite this, sometimes they only mix well if a few safety measures are observed. Unfortunately, in other cases, they don’t go well together at all. A few simple guidelines can help bring harmony in any case.

Newborns are the most valuable thing in the world to parents, and rightly so. Nevertheless, the family pet is beloved as well. Keeping them both safe is very important. The first, and one obvious to anyone, is to ensure everyone’s safety. That means both babies as well as the pet.

Luckily, that only needs a little foresight and some preparation. Dogs large and small, of course, will need to be scrutinized and perhaps controlled, depending on breed and individual character.

Newborn and Dog

Several will see the new little one as prey. Others are purely curious. Any situation can lead to harm to the child. When first introducing the dog to the baby, make certain the dog is controlled with a well-built leash. Stoop down to the level of both baby and pet. Keep an arm wrapped around the dog’s chest to avoid lunging. Keep the muzzle at least a foot away.

Sniffing with no physical contact is ok. Licking, while not toxic, is not recommended at this stage. A baby’s immune system is still maturing. Even though dog saliva contains special antibodies that safeguard them, they do pick up things that shouldn’t come in.

contact with the child’s skin. Several children are sensitive to the proteins in pet saliva.

Newborn and Cat

Cats can be more difficult to control. They’re more liable to be fearful or to playfully lash out with a claw-extended paw. They also slip off an average leash a little easier. When acclimatizing them to this fascinating new thing in the house, use a chest harness to guarantee full control.

Logically, neither should ever be left in areas where the two can come into contact unsupervised. That will need a little resourcefulness. Dog barriers, high cribs and other arrangements can keep almost all dogs at bay. Cats are trickier, but ensuring they don’t have a way into the baby’s room is feasible. It does call for vigilance, though.

Newborn and Pet allergy

Naturally, in a small percentage of cases, the baby will in fact be allergic to pet dander. Official statistics differ, but the total population of allergy sufferers is about 10%, only a small portion of which is allergic to dander. Also, of that 10%, only a very small portion is an infant. So, the overall chances are very low.

In such cases, just as with adults, steering clear of contact is best. A lot of parents won’t want to get rid of a loved pet from the household completely. The state of affairs is not an unresolvable dilemma, though. Very little pet dander remains airborne for long. Repeated washing of bedding and a once-per-month wash of the pet can assist a lot.

Naturally, the state of affairs is far from all negative or worrisome. Pets and babies can have a superb bond of the sort that exists with other family members and the pet. A caged pet bird or lizard can be just as much a pleasure for a baby as for anyone else. Several dogs have in fact saved babies from hazardous situations, either directly or by warning an adult. How emotional is that?

When it comes to protecting your newest edition to the family, the tasks at hand can seem daunting. The best way to go about it is one step at a time.

Look at your home. What would be harmful to your baby now, when they start crawling, and when they are walking? I’m going to provide you with some tips that were taught to me.

If your home is well kept, look closer. Anything that can fit into a toilet paper tube can choke your baby. So, even if you think it can’t be swallowed, check it, you never know.

Time for that first trip out of the house; don’t go anywhere until you have the proper equipment. The car seat must have the five-point harness system and L.A.T.C.H. (if you have a newer vehicle). Consider buying brand new; used or even older car seats can be brittle or broken in areas that you may not see.

Your baby crib is the most important. The slats should be no more than 2 inches apart and the mattress and the railing should have a gap less than an inch. If it is an older crib, you may want to sand it down and repaint it.

Eventually, you will need to keep your child out of certain rooms or in certain rooms. A safety gate is the best friend to parents that need help keeping their child out of dangerous or even precarious situations.

There are many types out there and it can be confusing but they really help.

There are some things to consider when shopping for anything for your baby. Age of items is a big one, for example, gates that were built before 1985 are accordion style and can seriously harm your child. Lead poisoning can be caused by older paints and should be avoided as much as possible.

Baby car seat safety tips

All Parents’ Most important goal is the car seat of their child, for instance, baby carrier safety, amongst other important goals. One of the key essentials in that plan is choosing the right safety seat for the car. The following are the minority things to look for when trying to obtain that ideal model.

The initial considerations are age and weight. Infants below age one ought to be provided with a safety seat explicitly personalized to their size. It should also be rear-facing and not planned for use by older babies.

Children older than one but less than four will weigh on average between 20-40 lbs. They’re also, of course, taller than infants and the older they are the taller. That opens up the prospect of a forward-facing car seat, which is a little more suitable for parents. It should be still installed in the back seat, though.

Convenience doesn’t have to be sacrificed for any of these goals, of course. Many baby carrier safety models are changeable. That is, they can be turned from a rear-facing position to forward-facing with a small number of easy movements. Still, keep in mind the right age and weight characteristics.

As an aside, there’s a distinction between an infant seat and an infant car seat. The previous is just a baby carrier that can be placed on the floor or table at home. A car seat is specially intended to be used in the car.

Luckily, clever designers have distorted the line between the two. Numerous models are available that do, indeed, allow strapping the child safely into the car. It can then be unbuckled and used as a carrier.

Given that it is to be used in the car, still, it will be vital that it satisfies certain criteria. A 5-point harness link design is key. This allows parents to use the car’s safety restraining belt to attach the car seat at the hips, shoulders and between the legs. That provides a very stable, secure platform.

It’s beneficial to have an overhead shield, for baby carrier safety. These are padded covers that rotate down over the child. A variant is the T-shield, a padded T-shaped section that attaches to the shoulder straps.

Look for models with a tether at the top that can be attached from the top of the child’s car seat to an anchor point in the car. That adds additional safety. Several have a system called LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children). This eliminates the need to use the car’s safety belts which, after all, were intended for larger children and adults. The car seat attaches, instead, completely to the anchors.

Secondary characteristics of a good car safety seat can mean convenience for the parent and comfort for the child.

Children come obviously, in different shapes. Similar to adults, several are slender and others more rounded. Some are a little longer or taller. That means they all fit a little differently in the seat.

A baby carrier safety seat that makes it easy to safely and securely add or get rid of padding, blankets and more supplies additional comfort and protection. Besides, parents have to spend less time adjusting the seat to make a good fit. That’s a win-win circumstance for both. Some even have included travel vests that can be buckled around the child.

That same double-theme of security and ease is passed on by seat designs that make it easy to add and adjust the restraining straps. Parents are on the go and it’s easy to give in to the enticement to take a short cut. But no one wants to forfeit safety. A design that needs only a few seconds to establish or move the seat satisfies all those needs.

Baby car seat injury

Thousands of children each year are catastrophically injured or killed on America’s roadways, parking lots and driveways. On some occasions, no design principle would have prevented the tragedy. On the vast majority of others, however, safety designs directed toward protecting children would have prevented these tragedies. Yet, the vehicle and child safety industries refuse to take responsibility for these needless injuries and deaths. Instead, they choose to routinely blame parents and others for the safety problems they have created.

Who should be held responsible when a child dies or is maimed when his child seat fails to provide adequate restraint? Who should bear the financial burden when a seven-year-old, rear-seated passenger submarine under the lap belt or rolls out of the shoulder belt and is paralyzed because the restraint system was designed for a 170 lb. adult male, rather than a 70 lb. female child? Who is to blame when a power window fatally strangles a child because the child placed her knee on the rocker switch and raised the window? Even more important than who bears responsibility is the following question:

Baby crib safety tips

Previously, selecting a baby bed was a straightforward affair. The majority of people simply made do with whatever was on hand. That may be one from a previous child, a kind gift from a neighbour or even a hurriedly off the cuff affair from a dresser drawer.

Luckily, nowadays, the ranges are as varied as the babies themselves. However, that brings in another challenge – choosing a good crib from all the options. That’s not a bad dilemma to have!

As of 1974, all cribs and mattresses have been required to conform to certain safety codes. Although some pre-1974 models could still be around, donated by a generous neighbour or family member looking to save you money. Scrutinize them cautiously ensure they meet certain criterion covered by the regulations.

To prevent babies from getting ahead trapped between the bars, among those safety rules  is the need for crib slats no wider than 2 3/8 inches.

They should also be sturdy enough that older babies can’t twist or shatter them. Some have a top rail that is covered insecure material, by and large, a type of strong plastic that won’t come off in chunks, since babies may stand up and chew on it.

The crib, in general, should be similarly sturdy and the mattress support mainly so. One way to verify is to look at the rails underneath the mattress. One along the centre is good, two is better. The cross-members should be sturdy and spaced no more than a foot apart.

The crib mattress itself will generally be either an innerspring design or foam of some kind.

Interior spring mattresses are great for adults, however, they have pros and cons for babies. They offer good support, but babies are so much smaller than the factors aren’t quite the same, even when the coils are spaced closer together. They also have a propensity to bend away from the crib perimeter, creating an opening that can trap a foot or hand.

Foam mattresses are either ordinary foam latex or the newer heat-sensitive, memory foam type, such as Tempur-Pedic styles. Both work well, but the memory foam crib mattresses will be a little more pricey. That additional cost may well be worth it, seeing as memory foam creates a slow-adjusting and secure mattress.

Standard foam latex makes bouncing easier, making it a little more probable that the baby will bounce a chin or chest onto the top rail. One means to avoid that is simply to get a crib with rails tall enough to make it almost unfeasible for the baby to jump high enough to harm itself.

As for parents searching for a high-quality baby crib, convenience is a vital factor. Crib railing regularly has a mechanism to let lose the front panel, either by a foot pedal or a hand lever, or sometimes both. Some need both operations at the same time to lower the chances of accidents.

Finally, but far from unimportant for the number of parents, the crib should be striking and fit in with the overall room decor. The baby may not care, but it’s absolutely reasonable for parents and visitors to do so!

Baby safety monitors

Baby safety monitors; As a new mom, you simply do not sleep well or have peace of mind worrying about your baby when they are sleeping. With such a variety of baby monitors on the market, you can sleep and rest easy while your baby sleeps.

A lot about keeping an eye and ear on babies hasn’t changed for many years.

However, technology has improved one aspect dramatically. Baby safety monitors allow for remote viewing and listening that provides security and safety for the child and peace of mind for parents.

what’s also great about some monitors like angel care baby monitors is the fact that if your child stops moving/breathing the baby monitor alarm will go off. When she starts moving again it stops.

Because consumer electronics has grown to such an extent over the last 10-20 years, baby safety monitors are now equally sophisticated. A lot has become a combination of microphone and speaker, TV/Security camera, and computer all rolled into one.

With additional motion sensors and other features, they increase security and safety well beyond previous generations. They also provide the basic audio and/or visual capability that is basic to any baby monitor.

Most basic models offer only audio. They’re mainly a microphone that sends sound to a speaker in another room. However, even these low-end types can make that much more convenient and useful than models of the past. The speaker, for instance, no longer is only a cheap small box that sits on a table. It can be in the form of a cell-phone style unit that is easily carried on the belt or in a pocket.

The less expensive models feature a small TV-style receiver that can be conveniently set on a kitchen counter or living room table. whiles others are a mobile monitor the size of a cell phone LCD. However, more expensive but more functional models add a visual feature. The camera is pointed on the baby’s room or bed. The receiving unit, here too, can be of one of two basic types.

Another area that has improved enormously over the years is the range. Like portable phones, higher frequency baby monitors now allow the receiver and transmitter to be much further apart than in years past. Not restricted any more, to a few yards away within the home, the mobile receiver can be placed outside next to the pool or garden fence, in the garage… anywhere your phone will reach. like the phones too, interference is virtually a thing of the past.

Moreover, other baby safety monitors models incorporate computer and Internet technology. These styles can transmit audio-video to your computer in the home office or at work miles away. However, not intended to allow parents to leave a baby unsupervised, it makes it easy for the parent at work to know instantly what the one at home sees or hears.

The feature also opens up the option of recording. Like any security camera-style device, much of that footage is going to be uninteresting. Thank heavens! But when something is amiss it can often be very helpful to be able to view the preceding and following minutes.

That provides the ultimate in security. But it’s also helpful in less extreme situations. Babies who become ill or injured can be better diagnosed when there’s a continual, real-time record of their actions. Multiple transmitting units can send data for more than one room to a single location, as well. That’s handy for keeping an ‘eye’ on more than one child at a time.

Still more sophisticated systems are available that sense the baby’s movements and provide alarms when they reach certain limits of distance or force. That’s highly useful for babies who are a little restless when sleeping or when you want to know they are waking up. It provides the next best thing to having a robot continually watch and report back on anything of interest or concern. Wait a few years and that may be an option, tool.

What is a baby monitor and how does it work?

In the fast-paced world, we live in today, many obstacles come with juggling family life and work, especially with a new baby in the house. Often times, parents find it difficult to manage their efforts of doing chores while watching the baby.

No one can be at two places at the same time, and it has been one of the major dilemmas of parents who still want to be productive around the house but more importantly, want to prioritize their child’s safety. This is the very reason why baby monitors have become very useful to many parents. These gadgets allow parents to monitor the baby’s activities while they are not inside of the nursery or are working at a distance.

A baby monitor is a gadget set that has a transmitter and receiver, which sends either sound or video (depending on the type) for the parent to be able to supervise the activities of the baby while he or she is away.

There are different types of these monitors –the audio, video or sensory. The audio baby monitor receives and sends sound so that the parent could hear the baby from a distance. The video monitor on the other hand works like a tiny TV by having a camera record the baby’s movements while the parent could watch on a small screen receiver. And the sensory monitor is a movement detector that alarms the parent when it cannot perceive any movement from the child for more than 20 seconds.

How does it play a role in the safety of the child?

What baby monitors basically do, is allow the parents to know their child’s activities and to watch out for any possible problems from afar, especially if the baby is asleep. Through this, they could at least do their usual work without having to feel worried that their child might not be safe inside the room alone. Many of the hi-tech monitors nowadays, especially video or even movement-sensitive monitors instantly alert the parents when there are problems detected.

Sensory monitors even send alarms whenever they cannot detect movement from the baby for 20 seconds or more. Even the simpler models of these monitors like the audio monitor at least keeps the parents aware if their baby needs them, especially when the child cries. With this technology, parents are given a way to make sure that their baby is safe especially during times when no one is left inside the room to watch the child.

Nowadays, it is really difficult for any parent to be able to be by their child’s side 24/7. But despite such circumstances, it is good to know that technology has managed to make life easier by giving busy moms and dads the option keep an eye on their precious little one even when they aren’t in the same room.

And no matter how busy life may get, it is at least assuring to a lot of families that there is a gadget available that truly contributes to their peace of mind and adds to the precautions that parents place in providing for their child’s safety.
